About this release
Cozmos reinterpret Sun Ra and Charles Mingus on this Jazz Room Records single, bringing Afro-Cuban jazz and funk into a compact ensemble setting. Arranged and produced by Sam Robles, the session features drums from Kiko Cornejo, percussion from Steve Haney and bass from Mark Vanderpoel, with Travis Klein on tenor saxophone and Robles on alto saxophone and flute. The group includes members of Los Angeles collective Jungle Fire. Their version of Watusa places interlocking rhythms beneath the horns, while Meditations On Integration draws a funkier line through Mingus’ composition. Together, the two performances connect cosmic jazz repertoire with a strongly percussive approach.
