Mankunku Quartet - Yakhal Inkomo

Mankunku Quartet’s Yakhal’ Inkomo captures tenor saxophonist Winston Mankunku Ngozi with pianist Lionel Pillay, bassist Agrippa Magwaza and drummer Early Mabuza. Recorded in Johannesburg in July 1968, the album pairs two Mankunku compositions on the first side with pieces by Horace Silver and John Coltrane on the reverse. Yakhal’ Inkomo and Dedication sit alongside Doodlin’ and Bessie’s Blues in a concise four-track session. For this Mr Bongo special edition, Miles Showell cut a half-speed master at Abbey Road using audio from the original master tapes. The single vinyl LP comes in a tip-on sleeve with obi strip.
