About this release
World Galaxy sets Alice Coltrane's piano, organ and harp against a string ensemble led by David Sackson, expanding the scope of her spiritual jazz. Recorded in November 1971 and released the following year, it places three original Galaxy compositions between My Favorite Things and A Love Supreme, two pieces closely associated with John Coltrane. Frank Lowe, Reggie Workman, Ben Riley and timpanist Elayne Jones join the ensemble, with violinist Leroy Jenkins appearing as a soloist and Swami Satchidananda providing narration. Familiar melodies become points of departure for orchestral passages, freer playing and meditative textures.
