About this release
Jazzman’s Spiritual Jazz 19 turns to the underground sounds of America’s West Coast, with Part 1 surveying the 1950s and 1960s across fourteen tracks. Chico Hamilton, Victor Feldman, Curtis Amy, Harold Land and Charles Lloyd feature in a selection that follows modal and spiritual currents running alongside the region’s better-known cool jazz scene. The compilation places these recordings within the wider story of California’s musicians, independent labels and changing cultural life.
Blue Sands, Shaker Heights and Dervish Dance are among the pieces gathered here, connecting exploratory playing with the rhythmic drive of the period. This separate double-LP volume comes in a gatefold sleeve with liner notes, photographs and a download code; Part 2 continues the story into the following two decades.
