About this release
Illmatic places Nas’ detailed writing about Queensbridge over production from DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q-Tip and L.E.S. Released in 1994, his debut moves from The Genesis into N.Y. State Of Mind, with Life’s A Bitch, The World Is Yours and Halftime completing the first side. The beats draw on jazz and soul samples while leaving room for closely observed stories, shifting perspectives and dense internal rhymes. Memory Lane and One Love continue that focus on the second side before Represent and It Ain’t Hard To Tell close the album. Its concise sequence keeps the emphasis on the writing and production.
