About this release
Songs from the Big Chair broadens Tears for Fears’ sound beyond the darker synthesizer-led approach of The Hurting. Released in 1985, the second album brings guitars, keyboards and carefully layered production into songs with a more expansive scale. Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World sit beside The Working Hour and Mothers Talk on the first side, balancing direct choruses with longer arrangements. I Believe changes the pace before Broken and Head Over Heels lead towards the atmospheric closing Listen. The result keeps Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith’s melodic instincts at the centre while drawing on a wider musical palette.
