Active Systems - The Red EP

Active Systems opens the account for Split Lip Records with four tracks that connect stark electro, IDM and the stranger corners of Detroit techno. The Red EP draws on the exploratory spirit of Underground Resistance, Boards of Canada and Rephlex, with an ear for rough edges and melodies that linger.

“Gabbol” sets a cold, melancholy mood over a hip-hop-paced beat before “Itsover” shifts into skippier rhythms. On the flip, “Avoid” brings a wiry, mechanical funk, with “Maus” completing the record. This is the first release from Active Systems, whose early live appearances include Superbooth and Houghton. A 12-inch for listeners who like their electronic music a little unsettled, with plenty happening between the beats.
