About this release
Alèmayèhu Eshèté’s work with Philophon places the Ethiopian singer’s soul-influenced voice against the label’s house band. Alteleyeshegnem reinterprets one of his earlier songs, setting a commanding vocal above a tough beat, unusual harmonies and a pulsing bassline. Feqer Feqer Nèw takes the reverse, with a prominent organ solo adding a psychedelic edge to its funk rhythm. Remastered for this two-track reissue, the recordings connect Eshèté’s distinctive phrasing with Philophon’s approach to live rhythm and production. The pairing follows the singer’s longstanding interest in reshaping American soul influences through his own musical vocabulary.
