About this release
Moved By Sound brings Amiri Baraka's Black And Beautiful Soul And Madness back to vinyl. Originally released in New York in 1968 on Baraka's own Jihad label, the album places poetry and vocal performance alongside soul and doo-wop, capturing an uncompromising moment in his recorded work.
Across nine tracks, the group moves between singing, spoken passages and chant, often blurring the boundaries between them. Beautiful Black Woman opens the record, with Madness, Sacred Chant and Unity among the pieces that follow. The performances connect the directness of the voice with the freer possibilities of experimental music.
