About this release
Recorded in Paris in 1978, Music / Sangam documents Don Cherry’s first meeting with Indian percussionist Latif Khan. Produced by Martin Meissonnier and Pierre Lattès, the session brings Cherry’s open approach to improvisation together with Khan’s rhythmic vocabulary, moving between jazz ideas and Indian musical forms. The musicians had not played together before the recording, but quickly developed a shared language across the studio instruments. Three pieces occupy the Music side, followed by ‘Rhythm 58 1/4’ and the extended title piece on the Sangam side. This Heavenly Sweetness edition returns the album, first released in France in 1981, to vinyl.
