About this release
Fela Kuti and Africa '70 stretch out across three extended grooves on Open & Close. First released in 1971, the album builds its momentum from interlocking percussion, insistent bass and bright horn lines, leaving plenty of room for the band to develop each rhythm. The title track fills the first side with a dance and instructions for its steps. Swegbe & Pako and Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo occupy the reverse; the latter connects resistance to British colonial rule with Fela's wider political concerns. This 50th anniversary vinyl reissue restores the original gatefold jacket.
