João Pimenta Gomes - Dois Desertos

João Pimenta Gomes recorded Dois Desertos in a single day in Los Angeles, working with producer Mario Caldato Jr., drummer Abe Rounds and bassist and cellist Gabe Noel. Simple scores left the players plenty of room to improvise, and every performance was captured live in one take, without overdubs.

The album centres on the resonant tones of the Cristal Baschet, an instrument played by rubbing glass rods. Gomes uses it as a textural foundation while bass and cello carry the melodies, mixing original compositions with ideas drawn from Portuguese fado. Caldato’s live mixing keeps that spontaneous approach intact, making this Amor In Sound LP an inviting meeting of acoustic detail, ambient space and improvisation.
