About this release
Joshua Sithole’s Africa brings flute and saxophone into arrangements that connect jazz, funk, gospel and South African musical traditions. Sithole was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and vocalist whose playing developed through busking and live performance, and that rhythmic directness carries into the album. Africa and Workshop open the first side before Amakwenkwe, Chisa and Soul Ship, while Joshua’s Way and Sigodukeni lead the second half towards Ekuseni and Nobody Knows. The Voom Voom reissue brings the ensemble’s interlocking parts back into focus, with bright horn lines, guitar and percussion giving the record both movement and a strong melodic centre.
