About this release
Maryos Syawish explores memory, identity and place on Qurmami, his debut album for Research Records. The Melbourne-based artist, known as one half of Sleep D, developed the record over eight years, weaving recordings from a trip to Iraq into ambient electronic compositions.
The title translates as my roots, reflecting Syawish's Chaldean Assyrian heritage and his experience of growing up in Australia. Across eight tracks, quiet textures gradually open into more rhythmic passages, with contributions from Khaled Kurbeh and cellist Abby Sundborn adding further detail to this personal collection.
