About this release
Muluken Mellesse’s recordings with the Dahlak Band capture a late chapter in the music associated with ‘Swinging Addis’. Originally issued by Kaifa in 1976, the album sits at the centre of the Éthiopiques 31 programme and presents Mellesse’s expressive singing within a tightly arranged ensemble setting. The Dahlak Band had developed from the Equators, who accompanied him on earlier recordings. This Heavenly Sweetness edition brings the complete album back to vinyl, moving from ‘Djemeregn’ through songs including ‘Woub Abeba’ and ‘Bayesh Des Yelegnal’ to ‘Tezeta’. It documents the blend of vocal phrasing, jazz instrumentation and groove that distinguished the scene.
