About this release
Either/Orchestra and Ethiopian guests revisit the work of Nerses Nalbandian, the composer, arranger and teacher who helped shape modern Ethiopian music. His writing and instruction connected the brass-led ensembles of the post-war period with the developments later associated with ‘Swinging Addis’. This Éthiopiques release presents that legacy through live performance, bringing pieces including ‘Amhara Rumba’, ‘Ambassel’ and ‘Afriqa’ into a new ensemble setting. Rather than presenting Nalbandian as a performer on these recordings, the project places his compositions at the centre of a tribute. The Heavenly Sweetness double LP includes an eight-page insert with photographs and background notes.
