About this release
Got To Be Me connects Nigerian soul and boogie with the musicians Rick Asikpo encountered while studying in Houston. Recorded with Afro Fusion at River City Studios in Baton Rouge in 1981, the album originally appeared in Nigeria on Afrodisia. Synthesiser layers and extended grooves link the title track, Disco Life and the two parts of Jam, while Love Love and Let’s Get High explore a slower soul direction. Asikpo’s involvement in Houston’s People’s Workshop forms part of the record’s background, bringing Southern U.S. and Nigerian influences together. Soundway’s reissue returns the complete eight-track album to vinyl.
