About this release
How You Been is the second album by SML, the quintet of Anna Butterss, Jeremiah Chiu, Josh Johnson, Booker Stardrum and Gregory Uhlmann. Bass, synthesisers, saxophone, percussion and guitar form the starting point for music shaped through collective improvisation and extensive studio editing. Following Small Medium Large, the group worked from a larger archive of live recordings, captured as they developed their sound across performances in late 2024 and early 2025. The thirteen-piece sequence connects those spontaneous performances with a shared approach to production, allowing acoustic playing and electronic treatments to interact throughout.
