About this release
Soul Sugar and Dub Shepherds reinterpret Rick James' Super Freak as a reggae single led by Jolly Joseph's falsetto. Recorded live on vintage equipment at Blue House Studio, the track combines a heavy bassline with organ, piano, guitar and Mini Moog, giving the familiar song a different rhythmic setting. Dub Shepherds then take the recording to Bat Records Studio, working with a 24-track tape mix to open up the sound and space around the instruments. This Gee Recordings single presents the vocal version on one side and the dub mix on the other, pressed as a 7-inch record at 45 RPM.
