About this release
Modern Pop From Mauritania 1984-1989 gathers eight recordings by Yassine Nana and his group, made in Nouakchott, Paris and Rabat during the cassette era. Drum machines, synthesizers and electric guitars meet Saharan musical structures, with reggae, dub, new wave and funk woven into the arrangements. Sung in Hassaniya and classical Arabic, the songs explore love, travel, exile and music itself. The collection captures the Nana family's musical traditions adapting to changing studio technology, bringing locally circulated recordings together through the joint work of Sofa Records and Les Disques Bongo Joe.
