About this release
B.J. Smith’s fourth Dedications to the Greats release takes Billy Swan’s interpretation of ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ as its starting point. Joe Harvey-Whyte’s pedal steel is central to three contrasting versions, bringing a country inflection to Smith’s Balearic arrangements. ‘Mother Earth’ unfolds through acoustic picking, electric guitar, percussion and organ, while ‘Earth Heart’ features Tamar Osborn’s flute alongside an extended vocal arrangement. The closing version uses shuffling drums, warm bass and acoustic guitar to place the song in a more compact Americana setting. Rather than following the familiar shape of the Elvis Presley recording, Smith lets the song develop through spacious, slowly building instrumentation.
