About this release
Abstract Orchestra reworks the music of MF DOOM and Madlib’s Madvillain project through Rob Mitchell’s big-band arrangements. Saxophones, trumpets and trombones replace and expand the original samples, keeping a hip-hop pulse while opening space for improvisation. Recorded live in the studio with few overdubs, the nine-track album explores the jazz, television soundtrack and film-score influences running through Madvillain’s music. “Accordion”, “Curls” and “All Caps” appear alongside two extended “Madmix” pieces, with arrangements shaped by Mitchell’s interest in Quincy Jones, Lalo Schifrin and David Shire. ATA’s LP presents the complete first volume across two sides.
