About this release
ESG’s Step Off applies the group’s sparse approach to funk to seven rhythm-focused songs. Originally issued by Soul Jazz in 2002, the album brings the Scroggins family’s post-punk and dance-music connections into a later recording, with second-generation members Chistelle on guitar and Nicole on bass. Renee’s vocals sit within arrangements that keep the emphasis on groove and space rather than dense instrumentation. “Be Good To Me”, “Talk It” and “It’s Not Me” take the first side, with “Six Pack”, the title track, “Sensual Intentions” and “My Street” on the reverse. This Fire Records reissue comes on neon orange vinyl.
