About this release
Swiss saxophonist Gilles Torrent leads a quartet through original compositions and John Coltrane pieces on Buleria. Piano, bass and drums provide a steady foundation for melodic exploration and improvisation, moving from “Danse Tropicale” and “Ouannassa” into Coltrane’s “Bahia”. The title piece develops a flamenco-related theme over eight minutes, while “Turquoise Part III” and “Naima” complete the second side. The arrangements draw on modal and spiritual jazz, allowing the saxophone to move between quieter passages and more forceful playing. Jazzman presents the six-track album on 180g vinyl in a tip-on sleeve.
