About this release
Macie Stewart returns to piano on When The Distance Is Blue, combining prepared instruments, field recordings and string-quartet writing across eight pieces. Initial sessions with Dave Vettraino at Chicago’s Palisade Studios used coins and contact microphones to change the piano’s resonance. Recordings made in markets, airports and stairwells become part of the arrangements, alongside contributions from cellist Lia Kohl, violist Whitney Johnson and bassist Zach Moore. “Tsukiji” draws on a Tokyo market recording, while “Stairwell (Before And After)” combines piano with vocal improvisation captured in Paris. International Anthem presents the full eight-piece cycle on vinyl.
