About this release
Where We Come From brings Makaya McCraven’s Chicago approach to a meeting with London improvisers at Total Refreshment Centre. Recorded across two nights in October 2017, the sessions feature Nubya Garcia, Theon Cross, Joe Armon-Jones, Soweto Kinch and Kamaal Williams alongside McCraven’s drums. Live material is mixed with reworkings and overdubs from producers including LeFtO, Darkhouse Family, Ben LaMar Gay, Emma-Jean Thackray and Quiet Dawn. The result moves between group interplay, loops and compact beat sketches, treating the recordings as material for a mixtape. International Anthem’s LP contains the full fourteen-track programme, including Birthday Solo and TRC Thank You Outro.
