About this release
Compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, J Jazz explores Japanese modern jazz recorded between 1969 and 1984. Koichi Matsukaze Trio’s Earth Mother opens with a strong bass-led pulse, followed by Takeo Moriyama’s North Wind. Elsewhere, the selection brings together the Tohru Aizawa Quartet, Eiji Nakayama, Takao Uematsu and Shintaro Quintet, moving between spiritual jazz, Latin rhythms and electric fusion. George Otsuka Quintet’s Sea Breeze and Terumasa Hino’s collaboration with Reggie Workman broaden the range across the three records. The twelve-track vinyl programme includes North Wind, Sea Breeze and Ode To Workman, tracks that were omitted from the compilation’s CD edition.
