About this release
A Paradise In The Hold draws on Yazz Ahmed’s British-Bahraini heritage through contemporary jazz, traditional rhythms and storytelling. The ten-track album takes inspiration from pearl divers’ songs, wedding poetry and women’s drumming circles, exploring belonging and identity across its extended forms. Ahmed writes for the voice here with English and Arabic lyrics, working with singers including Natacha Atlas and Brigitte Beraha. Percussionist Corrina Silvester and drummer Martin France help shape the connection between the rhythmic traditions and the ensemble’s jazz language. From She Stands On The Shore to Waiting For The Dawn, the programme reflects a decade of research and musical development.
