About this release
What Freedom Means / Tenderly presents two recordings by Ishola Muhammad under his A.M. Muhammad name. Recorded in 1980, What Freedom Means developed from a speech by Imam W.D. Mohammed, exploring responsibility as the foundation of freedom. Muhammad chose the alias in reference to the American Muslim Mission, linking the song's message with its original community context. The music places that idea within a modern soul, funk and disco setting, with Tenderly offering the second side of the single. Rain & Shine's RSR007 7-inch brings the two recordings together in a reissue of this stage of Muhammad's work.
