About this release
Johnnie Mae Matthews pairs ‘I Have No Choice’ with ‘That’s When It Hurts’ on this Big Hit reissue. A central figure in Detroit’s independent soul scene, Matthews founded record labels and helped develop artists who would go on to work with Motown. These two recordings bring the focus back to her own singing, with the emotional delivery of ‘I Have No Choice’ leading the pairing. The remastered seven-inch is pressed on heavyweight vinyl and comes in a full picture sleeve. Notes and photographs contributed by Matthews specialist Richard Gilbert add context to her place in Detroit soul history.
Format: 7" heavyweight vinyl, picture sleeve with liner notes
