About this release
Strawberry Letter 23 and Ice Cold Daydream capture Shuggie Otis' combination of soul, funk and psychedelic arrangement. Strawberry Letter 23 balances a melodic vocal with layered instrumental textures, while Ice Cold Daydream brings a more direct funk rhythm, organ and wah-wah guitar to the reverse. The pairing also preserves Otis' original recording of Strawberry Letter 23, later covered by The Brothers Johnson. Epic's remastered 7-inch reissue reproduces the original label design and uses a large centre hole. Together, the two songs offer contrasting examples of Otis' songwriting and instrumental approach within a compact single.
