About this release
Habibi Funk collects nine recordings by Ibrahim Hesnawi, the Tripoli musician known as the father of Libyan reggae. His music brings Jamaican reggae into contact with Libyan rhythms, adding funk, jazz and disco influences rather than treating those traditions separately. Never Understand opens the selection, followed by Tendme and Only World, which features Suzan. The label worked directly with Hesnawi and spent years locating tapes suitable for remastering after his studio reels were lost. This licensed LP documents that work through the music and an accompanying booklet, with background, interviews, photographs and archival material placing the recordings in context.
