Isao Suzuki - Approach

Approach brings bassist Isao Suzuki together with percussionist Masahiko Togashi, keyboard player Hideo Ichikawa and guitarist Akira Shiomoto. Recorded in 1986 and originally released on Art Union, the session balances quiet, spacious passages with forceful ensemble playing. Suzuki’s bowed-bass textures and Ichikawa’s synthesizers broaden the palette on Mysterious, while Make Trip and Tornado give Togashi’s percussion a prominent role. BBE’s J Jazz Masterclass reissue expands the vinyl programme to six pieces, including Long Straight Road, and spreads the session across two records. It captures experienced collaborators making room for a younger guitarist’s melodic voice.
