About this release
Mal Waldron and Terumasa Hino share the writing on Reminicent Suite, a Tokyo session originally released by Victor in 1973. Each composition occupies one side: Waldron’s title suite builds around a dark, insistent piano groove, while Hino’s Black Forest brings a more forceful rhythm and dense percussion. Tenor saxophonist Takao Uematsu, bassist Isao Suzuki and drummer Motohiko Hino join the two leaders, giving the long performances space for shifting ensemble passages and extended solos. The music draws on post-bop and freer improvisation without losing its rhythmic centre. BBE Music presents the album as part of its J Jazz Masterclass series, with a gatefold sleeve and obi strip.
