About this release
Orquesta Akokán’s third album brings Cuban singer, lyricist and composer Kiko Ruiz into the group’s mambo arrangements. Producer and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Plasse and pianist and arranger Michael Eckroth return at the centre of the project, connecting the ensemble to the sound of mid-century Cuban orchestras and New York Latin bands. Ruiz’s lyrics move between everyday storytelling and the spirituality of Palo Mayombe, with two songs, including the title track, drawing on its ritual language. Across ten tracks, ‘Caracoles’ combines that lyrical perspective with the orchestra’s dance rhythms. This Daptone edition presents the album on black vinyl.
