About this release
Portishead's third studio album extends the Bristol trio's sound through stark electronic rhythms, drone and folk-influenced passages. Beth Gibbons' voice remains central as Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley move between abrasive synthesis, guitar and tightly controlled arrangements. Machine Gun sets a rigid drum-machine pattern against the vocal, while the brief Deep Water offers a contrasting acoustic moment. The Rip and We Carry On develop the album's hypnotic repetition, with Threads bringing its eleven-track sequence to a tense close. Originally released in 2008, Third appears here in the complete double-vinyl configuration, spread across four sides.
