Sam Gendel - COOKUP

Sam Gendel revisits R&B and soul hits from 1992–2004 with the trio that recorded Satin Doll: Gendel, Gabe Noel and Philippe Melanson. Rather than straightforward covers, COOKUP reshapes their shared memories of songs by Ginuwine, Aaliyah, Beyoncé, Erykah Badu and others. Saxophone, synthesisers, bass, strings and electronic percussion form a changing palette, with Meshell Ndegeocello adding vocals to a version of 112’s Anywhere. Recorded in California, produced by Gendel and mixed by Dean Hurley, the Nonesuch album brings his experimental jazz approach to twelve familiar songs, finding new forms within the music the players grew up with.
