About this release
Soundway's Mangase / Hafi Deo pairs South African singer Shaluza Max with Congolese musician Tabu Ley Rochereau. Mangase, originally released in 2002, blends Maskandi and house with a soaring Zulu vocal. Rochereau's mid-1980s Hafi Deo takes a smoother approach, placing drum machines alongside the horn sound associated with his Congolese pop recordings. The two tracks bring different regional styles into a shared dance setting, with vocals and melody as central as their programmed rhythms. This double A-side 12-inch presents the original recordings together, rather than the later remix versions of Hafi Deo.
