About this release
SOYUZ’s If You Ask combines Belarusian-language songwriting with the group’s interest in Brazilian music and 1970s AOR. Alex Chumak sings about lost dreams, childhood and the feeling of being unable to return home, drawing on both the Belarusian band Pesniary and the music of Minas Gerais. Guest drummer Biel Basile recorded his parts to tape in São Paulo, while Anthony Ferraro added a Solina String Ensemble arrangement from California. The collaboration gives the single a warm, gently expansive setting. On the reverse, Tenório turns towards MPB through its Wurlitzer-led arrangement, offering a compact companion to the vocal A-side on this Mr Bongo 7-inch.
