About this release
Keira grew from recordings made in Gambia in 2013, bringing members of the Suso and Kuyateh griot families together with bassist and producer Huw Bennett. Working as Susso, Bennett combines those performances with his own bass, percussion and electronic production. Balafon, kora, ngoni, voices and environmental sounds place the album within Mandinka musical traditions, while its rhythmic treatment reflects his London jazz and electronic influences. The ten tracks move between village recordings, family compounds and individual musicians, including Yusupha Suso and Alagi Kuyateh. Soundway's vinyl edition presents the complete album across two sides.
