Habibi Funk draws from the catalogue of Libyan group The Free Music, led by singer, composer and producer Najib Alhoush. Their recordings connect disco, soul, funk and reggae, with guitar, horns and rhythm-section interplay running through the selection. Compiled with the help of Najib’s son Yousef, this first volume follows years spent locating source material, photographs and background information. Ana Qalbi Ehtar, Hawelt Nensa Ghalaak and Mathasebnish introduce a band whose output extended across ten albums. The vinyl edition includes a booklet documenting the group’s history with family recollections and archival images.
