As-Shams Archive Vol. 1 introduces the catalogue of As-Shams/The Sun, the independent label that documented South African jazz, funk and soul during the 1970s and early 1980s. Ten original compositions from ten albums bring together Kippie Moketsi, Pat Matshikiza, Dick Khoza, Black Disco, Harari and other artists connected with the label. The selection spans 1975–1982 and runs to around eighty-five minutes across two records. Remastered from the original analogue tapes and presented in a gatefold art sleeve, it offers both an introduction to the archive and a focused survey of South African rare groove.
