About this release
Ethiopian Modern Instrumentals Hits returns an original Ethiopian compilation to vinyl through Heavenly Sweetness. The ten-track programme brings together recordings associated with Mulatu Astatké, Tesfa Maryam Kidané and Bahta Gèbrè Heywèt, placing Ethiopian melodic traditions alongside jazz instrumentation and rhythmic arrangements. Mulatu's selections include Tezeta, Yègellé Tezeta and Yèkèrmo Sèw, with the other artists adding different voices to the collection. Rather than a retrospective spanning many editions of the Éthiopiques series, this release preserves the programme of the earlier compilation. The LP offers a focused introduction to these recordings and their place in Ethiopian jazz.
