About this release
Pop Makossa follows the meeting of Cameroonian makossa with funk and disco between 1976 and 1984. Compiled by Samy Ben Redjeb and Déni Shain for Analog Africa, the twelve-track collection connects local rhythms with electric guitars, synthesizers and bass-led dance grooves. Dream Stars’ Pop Makossa Invasion opens the album, joined by music from Mystic Djim & The Spirits, Bill Loko, Eko and Pasteur Lappé. Yaoundé Girls and The Sekele Movement show different approaches to the sound’s rhythmic drive, while Pat’ Ndoye and Clément Djimogne complete the selection. Artist interviews and photographs accompany the music in the booklet included with this gatefold double-vinyl edition.
