About this release
Tokyo Riddim 1976–1985 traces a meeting point between Japanese city pop and reggae, collecting eight recordings shaped by Jamaican rhythms and the sounds of British new wave. Miki Hirayama opens the set with two tracks, followed by Chu Kosaka and Izumi 'Mimi' Kobayashi. The reverse brings together Junko Yagami, Miharu Koshi, Marlene and Lily, showing different ways that the backbeat entered Japanese pop arrangements. Compiled by Kay Suzuki and Pol Valls for Time Capsule's Nippon Series, the album includes artwork by Noncheleee and a four-page insert. This vinyl edition contains the full eight-track programme, including Coffee Break and Hittin' Me Where It Hurts.
