About this release
Shades of Blue finds Madlib reworking the Blue Note catalogue through samples, remixes and new interpretations. Originally released in 2003, it draws on recordings by Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Ronnie Foster, Bobby Hutcherson and Andrew Hill, joining jazz melodies to Madlib’s beat-making. Slim’s Return, Distant Land and Mystic Bounce set out the approach before the sequence moves through Please Set Me At Ease, Stepping Into Tomorrow and Montara. Brief interludes connect the longer pieces, keeping the album moving as a whole. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl edition was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
