About this release
The Low End Theory builds A Tribe Called Quest’s second album around spare grooves, prominent bass and the interplay of Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Released in 1991, it draws jazz into its sample-based production, with bassist Ron Carter contributing to Verses From The Abstract. Buggin’ Out and Butter give Phife a more prominent role, while Rap Promoter and Show Business turn towards the workings of the music industry. Check The Rhime and Jazz (We’ve Got) capture the group’s rhythmic ease, and Scenario brings Leaders of the New School into the closing track. The uncluttered arrangements keep the focus on voices, drums and low end.
