About this release
Dawit Yifru’s self-titled instrumental collection brings together Ethiopian recordings restored and remastered from 1970s cassettes. Organ, electric guitar, bass, drums, tenor saxophone and trumpet are joined by violins, giving the arrangements a distinctive palette. Ethiopian chickchika, twist, Congolese rumba and waltz meet within Yifru’s compositions, reflecting the musical exchanges that shaped the period’s Ethio-jazz. The eight-track vinyl programme runs from ‘Lebe Leb Yelewem’ to ‘Wubit’, with Yifru’s organ at its centre. Issued by Muzikawi as part of its Archive & Research project, the album preserves a body of work rooted in Addis Ababa’s recording scene.
