About this release
Saxophonist and composer Jorga Mesfin explores the meditative side of Ethio-jazz on ‘The Kindest One’. Recorded in Atlanta in 2007, the eight pieces combine his soprano saxophone and piano with Takana Miyamoto’s piano and accordion, electric and double bass, percussion and djembe. A protégé of Mulatu Astatke and founder of the group Wudasse, Mesfin draws on Ethiopian musical traditions while leaving space for improvisation and spiritual reflection. From the opening ‘Thanksgiving’ through ‘Tizita’ and ‘Spring Water’, the album follows a contemplative course. Muzikawi’s vinyl edition presents the complete programme, ending with ‘Ye Abay Gizo’.
