About this release
Closer is Joy Division’s second and final studio album, originally released by Factory in 1980. Martin Hannett’s production gives the band’s bass, drums, guitar and keyboards a stark sense of space around Ian Curtis’ voice. Atrocity Exhibition opens with an unsettled rhythm before Isolation introduces a more electronic pulse; Passover, Colony and A Means To An End continue the first side. Heart And Soul and Twenty Four Hours lead into the slower closing pair of The Eternal and Decades. The album deepens the atmospheric direction of Unknown Pleasures while allowing keyboards and contrasting rhythmic textures a greater role.
